Identical Bids?

Beth Celis came out with an article last week stating that Solar and ABS-CBN's bid for the PBA rights were identical according to her sources.  Ronnie Nathanieslz also reiterated the point and even said that he spoke with Ricky Vargas, the TNT governor who said there was no other choice but Studio 23.  Unless there is some sort of ESP power going on, it is highly unlikely that both bids are even close.  Each had different resources and strengths to offer.

First off, there was never really any terms of reference distributed to potential bidders.  ABS-CBN had a exclusive window of about 2 months after which all the others were given 2 days to come up with their proposal.  At least on Solar's end, since there were no terms of reference and no luxury of multiple meetings to negotiate, it was a one shot deal hoping that the offer was satisfactory.

All I can say right now is that Solar's bid was put together based on my experience as an ABS-CBN talent/producer, PBA Marketing Head, ABC 5 talent, and now Solar Marketing Head.  All the learnings on how to reposition the league, and make it more relevant to our times were included.  May 19 is the day the board decides.  I'm certainly hoping the PBA will choose C/S Sports.

Kaboom, although I would like to see the PBA aired on Solar C/S, please tell your bosses at Solar to improve RPN's reach in the provinces. It is a sequestered channel and there seems to be no attempt by the government to privatize it. ABS-CBN is way ahead in terms of logistics and I believe it will be difficult for you guys to get the bid.

In terms of reach, unless ABS-CBN uses channel 2, there really isn't that much of a difference between Studio 23 and RPN.

Judester, ABS-CBN plans to use Channel 2 to air one game every Sunday. There are two options: the 10:30 am slot before ASAP (where their boxing bouts used to air) and the 6:30 pm second game time slot after The Buzz.

They also plan to use the Saturday night time slot to replay the provincial game that Studio 23 will air live at 4:30 pm.

Primetime was never an option for channel 2. It was the morning and late night (replay) slots only. Both slots if compared to primetime of RPN is not that much better. With the majority of the games on Studio 23, it is still the main network for comparison.

Judester, how will RPN improve its provincial stations so that the PBA can be seen nationwide? Does the government really plan to sell RPN to a private company like Solar? Hope this happens so that you guys can help improve this network.

We just had a meeting with Orly Mercado, the president of RPN and they are starting the refubishing of all relay stations in July.

Judester, the PBA board meeting to resolve the TV coverage issue has been moved to Thursday, according to Alaska's Joaqui Trillo. Two more days of waiting.
